Domenico Scarlatti was a very understated man in the 18th Century. He was a composer of many musical lives, traveling and living in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and England. Although little is known of the harpsichordist, he left behind 550 massive and impressive works of art for the solo keyboardist. While he was not the greatest composer of the classical era, he was certainly one of the most innovative. His works capture the essence of folk song, dance as well as technical mastery unmatched until the 20th century. His 550 works are layered with odd rhythms, harmony, and melody.
Our concert will feature discussions about this impressive collection as well as events in his life. We will explore art and innovation from the classical period to today. We have selected various sonatas from this collection and transcribed them for Jazz quintet (sax, violin, guitar, bass, and drums).
